The inviting town of Stowe, Vermont is located in the northernmost part of the state, burrowed among the peaks of the Green Mountains. And it’s those same mountains that transform into a stunning display of fall foliage throughout September and October. In fact, Stowe is largely recognized as one of the best places in the country to take in the reds and oranges enveloping the surrounding mountains. So with a visit to Stowe, leaf peeping will certainly be on the agenda. And we’ve found all of the other best things to do in Stowe this season, too.
Best Things To Do In Stowe
Now, back to that fall foliage we were alluding to. Autumn in Vermont is truly unparalleled. And one of the best ways to witness the true beauty of fall begins with a drive up Toll Road. Yes, you have to pay to drive it. But, the views from the top are worth every penny. The road winds up Mount Mansfield which actually resembles a human profile from the side and it’s also the highest mountain in Vermont. Some visitors opt to hike up the mountain, too.
The ride up the mountain will afford glimpses here and there of the ultimate view from the top which includes panoramic views of Lake Champlain, the Adirondack Mountains, and, of course, all of the surrounding fall foliage.
If you’d rather ride to the views versus drive or hike, Stowe offers yet another method to do it. Simply hop aboard Stowe Mountain Resort’s Gondola SkyRide which takes you to the top of Mount Mansfield. Once you’re there, you can grab a bite to eat at the Cliff House Restaurant that serves delicious grub and, you guessed it, incredible views.
Smuggler’s Notch State Park, named for its role as a smuggling route during the War of 1812, is our last recommendation for leaf peeping. It’s one of the best things to do in Stowe and offers several hiking trails to choose from.
Now, your authentic autumn vacation wouldn’t be complete without some tasty craft beers and ciders. That’s why a visit to the von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall is an absolute must. The Austrian-style brewery offers a myriad of beers along with Austrian eats like Bavarian pretzels, Bratwurst, Schnitzel, and more.
Arguably the only place more charming in Stowe is Main Street – the heart of Stowe’s alpine village. Quaint, charming, and magical, a stroll along Main Street is sure to please. There are several boutiques with locally-crafted goods, a bookstore, coffee shops, world-class restaurants, and so much more.
Your fall getaway to Stowe, Vermont awaits! And we’re ready to help you travel there stress-free all season long. Ship your luggage ahead with Luggage Free and avoid the airport chaos of carrying, checking, and claiming baggage.
